Julian Wilson Makes Good On The Goldie
After beating legend of the waves Kelly Slater last year, Australian
surfing sensation Julian Wilson will dedicate the biggest event of his
career to the National Breast Cancer Foundation by competing on a pink
board at the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast beginning this weekend. At just 19, Wilson is considered one of the up and coming talents of surfing after claiming various junior world titles and raising a huge global profile. He has received a wild card entry into this weekend’s event at Snapper Rocks [Gold Coast] and is hoping to excel when he takes on either Mick Fanning (Tweed Heads, NSW), Taj Burrow (Yallingup, WA) or Slater (Florida, USA).
Julian's unpredictability and the ease at which he makes the impossible seem simple is sure to please the huge local crowd at Snapper Rocks and will have a few of the top seeds watching out for his distinctive pink board which he will compete on throughout the event.
After being inspired by his mother successfully beating breast cancer 13 years ago and seeing close family friend Matt Hayden use a pink bat handle whilst playing cricket for Australia, the teenager from the Sunshine Coast has decided to compete on a pink board to raise awareness for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
"Two of my friends on the Pro Junior circuit have lost their mums to the disease. Breast cancer touches almost everyone at some point of their lives, it could be your mum, wife or friend going through the disease, nobody is immune to its affects,” Wilson said.
”You are never too young to be on the look out for breast cancer and all women out there no matter what their age should be on high alert for the early signs of the disease.”
This weekend will mark Wilson’s return to the place where he carved out a name for himself as a future force in world surfing after he beat Slater at Snapper Rocks in last year’s event during round one.
"I'm really excited about coming up against the world's best on the Gold Coast again at this year's Quiksilver Pro. I am guaranteed to be surfing against one of the current top three and hopefully I can repeat last year's effort and cause an upset!” Wilson said.
"Coming into the event as a wildcard and without any pressure allows me to really enjoy myself and the occasion. The level of surfing on the WCT is at an all-time high right now and I can't wait to be a part of it!"
Following the Quiksilver Pro, Wilson will auction off the pink board from the event on Ebay with funds going directly to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Wilson will also make a considerable cash donation.
After winning the “Performance of the Year” at the 2007 Surfer Poll Awards, Wilson has had a solid start to 2008 with two runner-up finishes on the ASP Australasia Junior Series from four events and currently holds the number two rating. Wilson has also invented the “Sushi Roll” maneuver whilst on location shooting a video in Japan.
