Chalk One Up For Peru: Sofia Mulanovich Claims 2008 Roxy Pro

WCT_Snapper_Roxy_Pro_2008-256.jpgThe Roxy Pro, the first event of the 2008 world tour season, is in the books, and, after finishing in the runner-up slot on tour last year, 2004 world champ Sofia Mulanovich has once again asserted her dominance. After a entertaining day of surfing at the famed Snapper Rock sandbank, Peru’s most visible sports star has emerged as the early rating’s leader on the Women’s ASP World Tour.

Showcasing the explosive talent of the women on tour in perfect little three to four-foot peelers, the level of surfing was higher than ever.  15-year-old Hawaiian prodigy Carissa Moore seemed like the surfer to beat throughout the event, but was upended by a Sam Cornish’s lucky break in the first semifinal of the day. In the second semifinal,
Sofia, who was also one of the most inform surfers in the Roxy Pro, squared off against Amee Donohoe and made short work of the Aussie vet.
With her beau watching from the beach and keeping an eye on her back-up board, Sofia squared off against Sam Cornish in the final. And for as dramatic as it could have been, Sofia ended up routing Sam, winning by a margin of more than 10 points.

So, that’s the nuts and bolts of the final day at the Roxy Pro. Congratulations to Sofia, job well done. And congratulations to all the other girls too, it was a hell of a show. Up next the ladies are headed to Bells, but before that, we have two more days of men’s surfing on tap here at Snapper, and considering some of the match-ups, there’s some fun ahead.
