Unleash Maui's Menehunes
Ian Walsh has been a busy man. When not out looking for waves that can kill him he's occupied his time thinking about his hometown's next generation. Coming to the Valley Isle Saturday, April 5, 2008, Ian Walsh's throwing his ever-classic 5th Annual Menehune Mayhem.Entry forms can be picked up at Hi-Tech surf shops on Maui and mailed to 720#5 Hana Hwy. Paia, HI 96779. The event is first come, first serve.
A free contest for any kid under 17, Ian got all his sponsors together
and pulled a little good-will-towards-mankind kind of thing for all the
local kids down at the Ho'okipa Beach Park. The contest will be broken down into the following categories, boys and girls ages 11 and under, boys ages 12 to 13, girls age 12-14, boys ages 14
to 15, girls age 15 to 17 and boys ages 16 to 17. Four person finals will determine the podium spots. All surfers are eligible to win awards in the one of three special award categories; Highest GPA for a Boy and Girl, The Eric Diaz Memorial Award and The Steve Cooney Memorial Award.
“This event is basically exactly how I would have wanted a surf contest to be like when I was their age," Walsh said about his event. "Free entry, tons of prizes for every kid, and a change from surfing 6 man, 15 minute heats to surfing 4 man, 20 minutes heats, which they will all be doing in a few years when they start doing pro events. With the help of all our sponsors, my friends at home and my family, it’s our 5th year and seems to
get crazier every year!”
