Red Bull Rising: Gavin's Thoughts
"I love coming to California, I really do. You know it's a good place
to prove yourself and even if the waves are sloppy, it's still such a
good place to do well. To me, down here, it feels like a real sport.
There's the infrastructure and the hype and just the interest, so I'm
always excited to come to California and try and win. Before here I'd been home back in Kauai for a little while, I went home to work on my boards and my surfing and gather my marbles and just get ready for this event, the Honda US Open. I came in about a week and a half ago - I came early as there was no waves in Hawaii and I heard there was swell here, so I got here as quickly as I could.
It helped I've also my family here - my mum is here at the moment and so is my little brother. We had his 13th birthday here yesterday in the Red Bull house - he wanted ribs so we got piles of them, like the full Flinstone's bbq. I actually ate to much food, actually everyone did, no one could sleep. And the thing is usually when my mum is around I do really well in comps, like go all the way, but not this time, I lost today which sucks big time. You know its only 20 minutes, best two waves and that's that. That's all it is, and you have to get your head around that, especially if you lose a few.
Now I just have to regroup, keep my chin up and move on. After this I go to Japan, and then after to England at Newquay, then there is two events in France. After that I'll drive down to Portugal and then after that there is two events in Spain. Then I'll come back to LA for a while, and then maybe head down for a surf trip to the Philippines, so its a pretty full on. Sometimes I think I could be at home hanging with my friends, but then I think I also could be working for a living, but this is my dream, this is what I want to do with my life and so when I lose like I did today, I just have to keep my head up and keep rolling and keep doing the best I can. I don't really care where I go next, just as long as I get there and get some points and get back on track.
So the rest of the week I'll be hanging here, working on my surfing, working with the coaches Kingy and Andy Walsh, and trying to spend as much time as the water, support my mates, and watch some footage and keep em improving. That's the deal right now. Aloha.
