Sweet Somewhere: An Update From the Rip Curl Search

Categories:

RB_Bali_Sml.jpgThe forth incarnation of the Rip Curl Search is off and running..."somewhere in Indo" they're saying...and while it ain't hard to figure out where they are, it also ain't hard to argue with the quality of surf thus far. The waves "somewhere in Indo" have been absolutely bombing, and the performances the boys are putting in have been mind-boggling to say the least.

A little history before we move forward, Mick Fanning won the inaugural Search even on Reunion Island in 2005. Andy Irons has since dominated the last two years, winning both "somewhere in Mexico" and "somewhere in Chile". Kelly Slater has never won The Search event, which doesn't especially bode well for everybody else on tour considering he hasn't lost to a Top 45 competitor all year long. But then conversely, as Andy's pointed out, this event's different because they playing field's a bit more level. True, Kelly did drop some outrageous scores in Round 1, but so did some of the other heavy hitters. Andy, Bruce, Mick, and Parko all threw down a few big numbers of there own.

Adriano, while not making his Round 1 heat, picked back up with his winning ways in Round 2, dispatching of local hero Made Garut Widiart. And in a battle of South African pride, Royden Bryson edged out his good bru Jordy Smith. All in all, it's been a great showing for the Red Bull crew thus far. All are into Round Three, but it's Tiago Pires and Royden who have it the worst. Tiago has the unenviable task of taking on Kelly, while Royden's facing Parko. Win or lose, it's been a hell of a show so far, and there's heaps more swell on the way.
