Hanging With Their Heroes: Biarritz surfers spend a day learning with Tim Boal
It was a once in a lifetime opportunity where a group of talented
surfers were able to surf, hangout and learn from their heroes. About 20 talented young surfers of the region of Biarritz were invited
on Saturday 4 October to spend a day with Red Bull athlete Tim Boal and
some of Tim's pro surfing friends. Top 45 surfer Ben Dunn from
Australia, and WQS surfers Michel Bourez and Matt Wilkinson, joined
Tim in the very successful day.
Boal, the French surf champion, who recently qualified for next year's WCT, supervised the training in Capbreton, showing the kids the style that has earned him a no 3 ranking on the WQS whilst also passed on his tips to an eager-to-learn audience.
"It was a great day out," Boal said afterwards. "I remember when I was a kid and looking up to the local pro surfers who were competing around the world. Luckily now I'm in that position and am able to help these local surfers strive to be the best in the world."
After a first free surf session under perfect weather conditions, the young surfers, representing the crème de la crème of the new French surf generation, gained invaluable coaching and advice. In addition world renowned shapers Christian Bradley and Phil Grace were on hand to pass on some wisdom about the search for the elusive magic stick.
After that, the groms were itching to get back in the water and show what they were capable of. By the end of the day, the four surfing heroes were almost as stoked as the 20 frothing kids.
"It was a great day all round," said Boal, "this group has serious talent and it was great to be involved in a small way with their surfing. Hopefully one day I'll get to surf against them in a pro contest."
