Mission Alaska: Tactical Strike Pays Off Huge In The Great White North

Categories:

RB_Mission_Alaska2.jpgExpedition surfing is forever evolving. It's a great big world being made smaller by the use of modern day technology. The ultimate adventure is still out there to be found, and as we always know, discovery is unpredictable.

But with discovery comes risk and reward and no other athletes were more up to the task then the Red Bull crew of Jamie Sterling, Maya Gabeira, Carlos Burle, Raimana Van Bostaloer and Quiksilver's Jamie Mitchell on a recent trip chasing big waves in Yakutat in Alaska.

RB_Mission_Alaska1.jpgThey found themselves on the cutting edge of mother natures brutality in documenting new realms, pushing the boundaries of the sport of big wave surfing in hideous weather conditions. The 41 Fahrenheit degree water (5 degrees centigrade), air temperatures hovering around 32 Fahrenheit (zero degrees centigrade) and constant snow / rain for seven days did not dampen at all the crews quest for pushing boundaries. If anything it just added to the determination to make it happen.

RB_Mission_Alaska3.jpgThe first swell peaked in the middle of the night, rendering the storm useless. We only had 5 hours a day of light to pull this off. The second swell a few days later had been promised for over 10 days out and thankfully peaked at mid day on Saturday 29th November. I've got to admit, I thought we were skunked when we first got out there. The three potential breaks we believed could provide the size of waves we were in search of were a mess of white water caused by heaving currents and unfavourable winds. Then all a sudden the tide changed, rideable waves appeared before our eyes and the only 20 minutes of sun of the entire trip cast the most incredible rainbows we had ever witnessed over the athletes and the waves.

RB_Mission_Alaska4.jpgWe may not have scored the biggest, most gnarliest or heaviest waves on the plant, but we did push the boundaries of what is possible and everyone was stoked to the eyeballs with what was accomplished. They were the certainly the  biggest waves ever surfed in Alaska and they were ridden with style and finesse by a handful of the worlds most respected adventure surf junkies.
