The Julian Wilson Interview
Fresh off a blitz into Panama, a win over Kelly Slater, a third place
result in Durban, not to mention numerous accolades from a host of surf
mags, it's safe to say Julian Wilson's stock is on the rise. We caught
up with the boy who would be king to see what's going on in his world:First, lets talk about Panama. You got there before everybody else and ended up scoring a cover and feature in Surfing Magazine, can you tell us about those sessions?
Yeah, I was so happy I shot down there early with Struntzy [photographer DJ Struntz] and scored that swell. I was surfing on my own out at this perfect left, in the rain, and having a great time. It was cool when Walshy [Ian Walsh] and the others rocked up, but unfortunately we didn't get those waves again.
What was one thing that really stood out about your time in Panama?
The potential of the place is incredible. I will definitely be going back there and keeping an eye on swells down that way this year.
What was the highlight of the trip?
Those waves at the beginning, for sure. Surfing perfect waves and getting barreled with not a sole in sight, except for the photog was really special. I also enjoyed the adventure aspect of that area, tracking through mud, hanging with cows, just good, old fashioned surf tripping.
Shifting gears, lets talk about you beating Kelly on the Gold Coast. What was going through your head a minute before the horn blew?
I had to remember to keep looking at the lineup, not the beach. It can be a little daunting to see all those people right there looking back at you. I was just trying to focus on the task at hand.
Owen Wright beat Kelly at Bells, what's up with young, Aussie wildcards taking out the champ?
It's interesting isn't it? I think it's easy to blow things out of proportion a bit. Kelly just had a couple of rough heats. There's also the new format at Bells. If it was last year, Kelly could of had that off heat and still came back and one the thing easily.
You've surfed a lot against Owen, did you think he could take Kelly?
Owen and I have had a few battles in the Pro Juniors over the last couple of years and he is surfing really well right now. But in the end that's just surfing, it's two people against the ocean and anything can happen.
Finally, you've got a movie project in the works. How's it going so far?
I just got done with my first proper trip in South Africa with my mate Dusty Payne. We had a great time, got a few clips and hung out with lions. I'm really excited about the movie and will spend the next 12 months focusing on it.
Do you have a vision for how you'd like to see your movie?
It will definitely take shape and I will get more of a feel for it after a couple of trips. I do want it to be something memorable and something kids will froth on.
You've already got a whole herd of groupies, you're going to have to beat them back with a stick now. Got any good groupie stories? Any stalkers or anything?
I don't know anything about groupies, but there is someone who decided it would be fun to steel my identity online. They've done well and obviously have some talent so if he/she was interested in coming forward and taking responsibility for it then maybe I can find a way to use that talent in my movie project!
Got anything else to say?
See you this summer in California!
