Adriano Captures Billabong Pro Mundaka

When Adriano De Souza won his World Junior Title in 2003, and then
followed it up by winning the WQS in 2005, Sao Paulo knew there was
something special about the kid. But up until today, up until he served Kelly Slater his walking papers in their semifinal due
and went on to best Chris Davidson in the finall, 22-year-old Adriano
still had a monkey on his back. He still hadn't won a World Tour event.
To be sure, he's come close this year, but first has always eluded him. That all changed when he won the 2009 Billabong Pro Mundaka today.

"I
don't have words to express how happy I am right now," Adriano said in
his post-win interview. "I have been working so hard for this ever
since winning the World Junior Championships and the ASP WQS. To
finally win here in Mundaka, where the culture is so rich and the
people love surfing so much, is an incredible thing. This is the most
special day of my life."

South Shore Claims Red Bull Rivals

This past weekend the inaugural Red Bull Rivals took to the sand of, well, Sandy Beach, and all told, the event was an amazing success. With over 3,000 people on hand to see the best surfers from the South Shore go head-to-head against the best surfers from the North Shore, it was the can't-miss event of Labor Day weekend in Hawaii. And believe me folks. It didn't disappoint.

With the likes of Jamie O'Brien fronting the North Shore team, and young phenom Carissa Moore saddled up with the South Shore team, as well as ringers like Derek Ho and Kolea Fukumitsu adding a little extra power to the North and South, respectively, the talent level was amazing. Besides Carissa's amazing contribution, both Keanu Asing and Kekoa Cazimero blew doors all event long, and the definitely showed why they're a couple of the brightest up-and-comers from Town.

For as much youthful talent as Town had, the North more than made up for in veteran experience, with guys like Kalani Robb, Sean Moody and TJ Barron rounding out their roster. In fact, MVP honors went to the Country's Mason Ho, who won sky diving lessons from the Red Bull Air Force for the effort.

But experience can only get you so far. Town's froth factor was off the chart and the South Shore got out of the gates early. The North rallied back with a 13-4 run at one point , but in the final heat the South was able to pull it together, hold them off, and as they say, ride to victory. And with a judging panel comprised of KaiBorg Garcia, Dave Riddle, Brock Little and Jason Hackman, who was going to argue?

And just what was the winning prize you may ask? Well, initially the losing team was going to have to give the winning team their surfboards, but thanks to team captains Jason Shibata (South) and Kalani Robb (North), it was decided that whomever won would donate the boards to be auctioned off, and then use
the money to donate to several local Oahu charities. That's what you call Aloha in action.

All told, it was a hell of an event and not one that's going to be forgotten anytime soon. The South may have won this round, but we have a feeling that's not the last we've heard from the North Shore.

Jordy Smith's South African Swing

After the dust settled in Jeffreys Bay and everyone had jumped on the first flight home, Jordy Smith was still cruising through town. He had spent an obscenely small amount of time in South Africa this year and intended to stick around for a bit. After a few days whipping around on the ski it was time to hit the road. Here are the photos from when Jordy and photog Ryan Miller split from Jeffreys Bay and made the drive to Cape Town.

The Best From Huntington Beach

Some are calling this year's U.S. Open the best in the event's 50-year history. The waves pumped, the performance bar was through the roof, and the winner walked away with $100,000. That's a hard storyline to beat. And with that in mind, we bring you a few highlights from a crazy week. Special thanks to Tom Servais for the shots.

Walshy's Big Night Out

The life of a surf star is a tough, arduous existence, but somehow Ian Walsh does it. During the U.S. Open he not only gave us a tour of the event through his eyes, but he also found time to host a party at a swanky club in Newport. The following collection hopefully gives you a glimpse into just how rough the kid's life is. Special thanks to Tom Servais for snapping the shots.

Brother, Brother, Brother

Last week Kolohe "Brother" Andino was crowned 2009 NSSA National Champion. And while there's no question the kid's got more talent in his little toe than most of us have in all our creaky bones, an accomplishment like that is still not exactly something that happens overnight. Born and bred into the high-performance tradition of the San Clemente surf scene, he's had more than a few elder statesmen to draw inspiration from. Thanks to the photographic endeavors of lensman Jon Steele, we're happy to give you a glimpse into Brother's local lines.

A Maldive Moment

After the WQS pulled through the Maldives Red Bull riders Royden Bryson, Warwick Wright, Rudy Palmbloom and Wiggolly Dantes opted to stay a few extra days and see just what else the Indian Ocean island chain had to offer. As you can see, they found plenty of hidden corners to indulge in.

Jordy Braves The Elements At the Cold Water Classic

To date Jordy hasn't free-surfed at all, as he arrived last night and surfed his heat today. Then tomorrow, it's going to be crazy. It's guaranteed to be a lay day as the craziest storm ever is about to pound Cape Town. Read More...
