Pimp Your Board with Sofia!

RB_Sofia_Pimp_Boards.jpgThis was a cool day at my home beach in Punta Hermosa, Peru. Red Bull created a contest for 25 girls between the ages of 10 and 16 to come out to the beach and paint a blank surfboard shaped canvas, with the hopes of me choosing their design.  I was overwhelmed by the preparation many of the girls did before they arrived, they had their designs planned out on paper and they were working so hard.  It was difficult to pick a winning design because they were all so good and creative.

I was so stoked on the girls and how much heart they put into this contest. It was cool to see how the girls painted patriotic designs, representing our country of Peru. And then there were the designs that represented surfing and the waves, I was so impressed by the thought the girls put into this. And then there were two little girls, one was four years old and the other was one year old, they painted the board and themselves too, so cute.
I think the boys on the beach started to get a little jealous, they were crowding the girls wanting to give advice. I think we are going to have to do a contest like this for the boys soon!

It was hard to choose the five finalists and even harder to choose the winner, 16 year old Valeria Ilaquita. Her board represented by name, the ocean and had a great vibe to it. I was so stoked on her design and the
thought she put into it. Valeria will now paint one of my real surfboards with her design and I will take it to Australia to surf on it!

The rest of the day we spent in the ocean giving the girls their first surf lesson, it was incredible and inspiring. I was so stoked on Red Bull Pimp My Board event and can't wait to do it again. These girls inspire me, I feel
their love and want to continue to make them proud and be a good role model for them and of course get them into the ocean to surf!!!
